Questions to Ask a Mowing Contractor

Get clear on the cut before agreeing to the price. Ask about equipment, excluded areas, clippings, access and what the finished property should look like.

Content updated

A useful mowing conversation establishes boundaries, equipment fit, and the finished condition. It should also reveal what happens when the property is not as described.

Equipment and property fit

What machine is proposed and how will it enter? How are slopes, wet ground, hidden obstacles, and nearby public areas assessed? What vegetation falls outside its capacity? Ask how the operator protects fences, structures, and retained areas.

The work included

How many passes are included? Is trimming separate? Are clippings left, and is any debris removed? How is the mowable area measured? Ask about minimum charges and travel before comparing a per-acre rate.

Responsibilities

Who provides access and moves animals? What insurance applies? Who can approve extra work? For rights-of-way, drainage features, and buffers, who confirms permission and the maintenance instructions?

Verification

Ask for an agreed scope map and completion record. Review the area after the first visit before committing to a long repeat schedule. Keep the site-preparation checklist with the quote.
